So your looking to publish a book you say? Well if you are thinking about it, here are some useful tips that you should consider.

1. Do your research and get (3) quotes

Before publishing I requested (3) quotes from (3) different publishing agencies. I literally had them pitching their products and services to me.

The companies that I looked at are as follows:

  • Dorrance Publishing

  • Outskirts Press

  • Author House

2. Publishing is a sales business...and everything is negotiable.

Just remember that your money is more valuable to the company than your future book sales. They want to publish your book because they want your money immediately! So be sure to ask them what can they do to bring your cost down or increase products. The company can always do something and if they can't, there is another company that will.

3. Inclusive Publishing packages will usually include products such as the ones listed below: (Consider what you can do yourself and use that as leverage to negotiate price of package)

  • Copyright

  • Author Support Services

  • E- book format

  • Paperback Formatting (Color book and Hard copy = more money)

  • Online Availability at retailers such as; Barnes & Noble and Amazon

  • Free Marketing Consultations

  • Cover Creation and Consultation

  • Marketing Materials? (bookmarks and business cards)

If you can get a press release included in your package this would be beneficial... That was not included in my price and the company now wants approx. $500 to create one.(eek).. I might have to do that myself too.

3. Review. Review. Review

During the editing phase be sure to review your work thoroughly the first time...Maybe even have a friend that is great with grammar review it. Once the company submits you a draft, you will only have ONE opportunity to make corrections for FREE. Again, these people are in business of sales...and I'm not referring to the sales of your book!

4. Selling your book is not the job of the publishing company

Although the publishing company wants to publish your book, they won't really market or sell your book for you. The publishing company just makes your book available for sale. Now they will sell you a marketing package that can run from $500-$5,000.

You should consider how you want to market your book and create a plan B for marketing yourself.

5. Have a goal in mind for what you want your book to do for you.

Below is a copy of my book...which is now available. I think my concern is not really focused on selling justyet... I'm more focused on creating a brand with a positive message for my family that can be an example others can see. This just begins to add to my credibility.

6. Know how much you make off of every book that you sell individually and through other retailers. This rate is typicall between 15%-25%... so make sure you repeat number 1.

Ohh yea...I learned this tip a little late....

I recommend you consider all aspects of this tip in the beginning.
